Flaubert and the paradoxes of DomiNation – an online conference by Jean-Baptiste Chantoiseau

English conference « Flaubert and the paradoxes of DomiNation » at the 23rd annual meeting of the Society of Dix-Neuviémistes, Durham University, St Chad’s College (31/03-02/04/25). Thank you so much for these enlightening exchanges on literary and historical themes that fascinate us so much and deep congratulations to the organizing committee. It was an honour to share this panel with Abigail Fields (Yale University), Bertrand Marquer (Université de Strasbourg) et Elisa Puntarello (Université Lumière Lyon 2). Flaubert had an ambiguous relationship with political domination. A defeated idealist of the 1848s, he seemed to hold conservative views in the 1870s, to say the l’est. However, he is no less critical of the reactionaries: “How the good ecclesiastics will blossom again! I’ve gone back to Saint Anthony, and I’m working violently…” However,
Is there necessarily a contradiction here? Surprisingly, maybe not, and this is what I’ve tried to clarify while studying « Salammbô » through the question of the threshold. #flaubert #salammbo #sdnconference #durhamuniversity #rouen #rmm #literature #frenchwriter #jeanbaptiste_chantoiseau #conservateurdupatrimoine #bienenplace
